INTRODUCTION

Minority youth in Danbury, including Latino, Black, and other underrepresented groups, face significant socio-economic and educational barriers, which contribute to disparities in both academic outcomes and health. According to the Fairfield County 2023 Equity Profile, minority households, particularly Black and Latino families, experience lower incomes, higher housing cost burdens, and greater health disparities. This gap is further compounded by the underrepresentation of minority educators in the school district. Y.A.L.L. is designed to help these students overcome barriers through targeted leadership development, academic support, and holistic health education, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to thrive.

The Nuvance Global Health Academy's involvement in this project stems from the well-established correlation between health and education. Research consistently shows that students in low-income, minority communities are at a higher risk of poor health outcomes, which can impede academic success. Chronic stress, poor nutrition, and lack of access to preventive care are just some of the health challenges that contribute to lower graduation rates, absenteeism, and limited college and career opportunities. By addressing both the educational and health needs of these students, Y.A.L.L. aims to break this cycle, creating healthier, more successful future leaders.

Main Objectives

The Global Health
Connection

The Nuvance Global Health Academy’s investment in Y.A.L.L. is grounded in the recognition that education and health are deeply interconnected. Research shows that healthier students are more likely to succeed academically. By integrating health education into the Y.A.L.L. program, students gain the knowledge and resources to make informed health decisions, leading to better academic performance, higher attendance rates, and increased college readiness.

In Fairfield County, minority populations have higher rates of preventable health conditions and lower access to healthcare services. By addressing these disparities within the educational framework, Y.A.L.L. not only fosters academic growth but also promotes the long-term health and well-being of students, ensuring they are equipped to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. This dual focus on health and education aligns with the Global Health Academy's mission to improve health outcomes and empower communities through targeted interventions.
